Moisture in buildings is a major concern for two reasons: · Health of Occupants · Deterioration of Building Elements The health of the occupants is obviously first and foremost as damp living environments have been associated with adverse health effects including[1]: · Upper respiratory symptoms · Coughing · Wheezing · Asthma · Dyspnea (shortness of breath) · Lower respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children Deterioration of building elements is of major concern as failure of these elements leads to concern about the building’s safety. Early failure of building elements can lead to these elements collapsing and/or requiring immediate repair which can be very costly. Examples of failure are but not limited to: · Rotting timber floors · Rotting timber handrails · Concrete spalling (commonly referred to as concrete cancer) · Corrosion (rusting of handrails and other steel elements) Controlling the flow of moisture in buildings will assist in resolving both of the identified concerns.
